The year of 2005 is the year my family and I almost died.
You may remember Katrina. I sure as hell won’t forget it any time soon. Going through hell like that makes you realize what you can and can’t survive without. My family is one of the things I can’t survive without. Food is another. And if it weren’t for my weird neighbor Tom, we would all be dead.
And my neighbor Tom knew something that we didn’t know.
Tom had a basement full of supplies because he knew what the 37 essential food items were.
So, when the time came, we took shelter in Tom’s basement because ours wasn’t secure or prepared for disasters. Those moments were the most horrifying of my life. But what happened afterwards was even more horrifying. Because when the hurricane passed and we went out, we saw the image of the apocalypse.
You have probably seen images, but no image can do justice to the horror that Katrina left behind. I cannot describe in words the immensity of the suffering and pain that surrounded us. And then panic settled in.
Food looting can start anywhere and you should be prepared for the worst. Be it from Ebola outbreak, 9-11 style terrorist attack, political protest turn civil unrest or even the power of governments suppressing it’s own people.
We barely had any food left that had not been ruined by the hurricane. I thought for sure that we were going to die. But then Tom came to our rescue. He grabbed my arm and led me back into his basement. He opened a secret room that was full of food items. It was just like he had opened the gates of heaven to us! We managed to survive on Tom’s food supplies for two weeks, until things started to get back to some kind of normal.
As a thank you for saving our lives gift, my wife invited Tom to dinner one night, months after the disaster. We got to talking and this is how I found out his secret. You see, Tom had a list with the 37 items crucial to survival and he also knew:
- The food item most important to survival that people forget to buy
(it’s not what you think it is) - Which oil to avoid unless you want to get ill (most people make this mistake)
- Why honey can do more than just give you sugar (this is surprising)
- What food items have the highest trade value in a disaster (more valuable than gold!)
The information Tom knew was the only thing that kept us alive. In a manner of speaking, my family and I owe Tom our very lives.
Being prepared for a disaster like this is not an option. If you love your family, it is mandatory. Just like food is if you want to stay alive and to protect your loved ones.
